Gas odorization plays a critical role in managing the risks associated with loss of containment events. Odorization mitigates the potential consequences of a gas leak by allowing leaks to be detected before ignition or accumulation and explosion incidents can occur. Prompted by early incidents in the industry, the critical importance of maintaining a detectable level of odorant in the gas stream has been highlighted by periodic incidents where lack of odorant in gas has been cited as a contributing factor.  

Many pipeline operators – in both gas distribution and gas transmission – operate diverse and complex odorant systems due to the number and types of odorizers, the broad range of size in networks served, and seasonal changes in temperature and gas supply demands. Regulations regarding odorant monitoring are performance-based, generally without prescriptive requirements for monitoring frequency or locations. Although there are general trends, there is a broad variation in these monitoring frequencies across the gas industry. Much of the industry uses a risk-aware approach to setting monitoring frequencies, monitoring higher risk systems with greater frequency.

JANA’s Odorization Optimizer (J-OSO) considers the current Odorization Management Program employed by a pipeline operator in relation to regulatory requirements and general industry trends. The J-OSO analyzes opportunities for optimizing these Programs based on industry practices and the current level of monitoring by using a risk-based approach. Based on the analysis of the optimization options, short- and longer-term strategies are identified broadly across the Program and specifically for injection units, mini bypass units, and large bypass units. The options have been seen to achieve a 30 to 40% reduction in risk with similar or minimal increases in monitoring frequency.
